Vigo, 29 January 2018.- The Nueva Pescanova Group has made a huge step forward in its sustainable fishing programme by joining the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI). GSSI is a global platform and partnership of seafood companies, NGOs, experts, governmental and intergovernmental organizations working towards more sustainable seafood for everyone by ensuring confidence in the supply and promotion of certified seafood.
By joining GSSI, the Nueva Pescanova Group will contribute its knowledge and experience in improving the sustainability of the seafood supply chains; the ultimate goal of the organizations partnering with this initiative. Partnering with GSSI will, in turn, support the Group’s plans for sustainable sourcing certification. This initiative is part of the “Pescanova Blue” sustainability programme and is the Group’s approach to operationalize its guidance principles “Planet” and “Product”, two pillars of its Corporate Social Responsibility strategy.
The sustainability of its fisheries, aquaculture and seafood processing operations, as well as, the social responsibility towards its workforce and local communities are key aspects of the Nueva Pescanova Group’s commitments. Ángel Matamoro, Chief Corporate Social Responsibility Officer has pointed out that “the partnership with GSSI is very important for us to continue improving and effectively developing our commitment to the preservation of aquatic ecosystems and the marine environment and to ensure consumers’ confidence in certified seafood”.
Herman Wisse, Managing Director of GSSI’s Secretariat said, “GSSI is thrilled to be joining forces with the Nueva Pescanova Group in providing clarity, credibility and choice in seafood certification globally. With Nueva Pescanova Group’s global presence, the GSSI partnership continues to expand its reach and ability to further its mission towards more sustainable seafood for everyone”.
